We connect people to life. It’s our purpose, and we do it whether near or far. One of our Journeyman Plumbers recently returned from six weeks volunteering in Belize to teach plumbing, leadership, and life skills.
In January and February of this year, Caleb Showalter served at the Trades 4 Life School in Belize, mentoring and training young men eager to improve themselves and learn a valuable, marketable skill.
Trades 4 Life is a non-profit organization that connects professional tradespeople from all over the world with young men in Belize who desire education and skills. Courses are offered in welding and machining, refrigeration and air conditioning, mechanics, plumbing, and computer technology. Students also experience leadership development and spiritual growth.
Maintaining the plumbing infrastructure of Belize is a real challenge with virtually no local plumbing standards to reference. As a result, Caleb had to not only teach his eight students, but also adapt United States plumbing code to what is available and needed in the region. The curriculum provides classroom and hands-on training, which includes plumbing repair projects throughout the campus facilities.
Upon graduation from the six-week course, each student is able to demonstrate core plumbing proficiencies. Most utilize their newly-acquired skills through employment or by starting their own business. Teaching a trade really does change lives. Great job, Caleb!
