Heat Pump Water Heater FAQs

By now you’ve probably heard about our limited-time offer on heat pump water heaters: $1,399 installed! But if you’re unfamiliar with heat pump water heaters (also known as hybrid electric water heaters), you probably have some questions. The basics can be found on our website, but here are answers to four frequently asked questions (FAQs) that may help:

  1. Will this heat pump also heat and cool my house? Confusion here is understandable since heat pumps for heating and cooling homes have been around for a long time. But the heat pump we’re talking about is only for the water heater. While it uses the same technology as your home’s heating and cooling system (and your refrigerator for that matter), the heat pump that is attached to your water heater only heats water, not your home.

  2. Is a heat pump water heater tankless? A heat pump water heater uses a storage tank just like a standard electric or gas water heater. It is not tankless. The size of the storage tank can be 50, 65 or even 80 gallons. (Our $1,399 offer is for a 50 gallon model.) The real benefit is the technology used to heat all that stored water. A heat pump water heater uses electricity differently—by moving heat rather than generating it—consuming 2-to-3 times less energy than a standard electric water heater.

  3. Does it take a long time to heat a full tank of water? Compared to conventional electric models, heat pump water heaters typically have higher recovery rates, meaning they can provide hot water faster after being completely drained. But for everyday use, the answer depends on the size of your heat pump water heater’s storage tank, the demand for hot water, and the water heater’s mode of operation. A heat pump water heater can operate in three different modes: Heat pump-only mode is the most efficient, using very little electricity (but more time) to heat a whole tank of water. In standard mode, the heat pump water heater works just like a standard electric model, using an internal heating element to quickly heat water stored in the tank, with less energy conservation. But heat pump water heaters really shine in hybrid mode—heating water quickly and efficiently using a combination of the heat pump and the electric element, depending on the amount hot water being used.

  4. Will a heat pump water heater really save me money? This one is easy. The answer is yes! In fact, compared to a standard electric model, a heat pump water heater will pay for itself in energy savings within just a few years! Extended through January 31, 2021, standard installation of a Rheem Prestige ProTerra 50 gallon heat pump water heater is only $1,399. That’s over 40% off our regular installed price. Then, your heat pump water heater will use 60% less energy, saving you about $3,500 over its 10-year warrantied life!
